On Friday Newport RFC will play Monmouthshire County RFC’s Presidents XV at Rodney Parade as part of the club’s 150th anniversary celebration. Mon County RFC is an invitational side that originally played rugby at county level against teams from England and Wales and also played against the major touring teams. Their first international was against South Africa in 1906 when they lost 0 – 17 but they gained revenge when they beat them 14 – 8 at Eugene Cross Park, Ebbw Vale, in 1969-70. They have also played Australia and New Zealand and achieved another notable victory against the Japanese tourists in 1973 where they won an exciting match 26 – 16 at Pontypool Park.
The Black & Ambers go into this encounter after two tough games against Ebbw Vale and will be keen to get back to winning ways. Team will be selected after a light training session on Thursday and this post will be updated with full details.
