Death of Rugby League Legend

Newport Rugby Football Club was saddened to hear of the death of John Mantle at the age of 76.  John made a huge impact playing for Newport in the early sixties and won two Welsh Caps before ‘going north’ to join St. Helens.  He achieved legendary status there and went on to win thirteen Great Britain caps

Cardiff born – attended Bedwelty GS and played for Wales Schools. Joined Newport RFC after completing studies at Loughborough Coll where he played in Middlesex 7’s side. Short stay at Newport – played 27 times from 1962/3 to 1964/5 scoring 8t. Debut vs UAU at Rodney Parade Dec 27th 1962 (W14-8). Won 2 Welsh caps in 1964 (E,SA) before going north  for a successful career with St Helens RL. Played for GB Rugby League. Played his first Wales game with a broken toe which he did playing for Loughborough College the week before. He did not tell the selectors and took painkillers.
