Newport v Bridgend by Peter Ryan

Opposition Focus: Bridgend Ravens RFC

Two iconic teams in Welsh rugby are set to do battle once again on Saturday. Newport will welcome Bridgend as we enter the business end of the season. These sides have a lot of history and have met in big clashes. In 2003, Bridgend ran out 56–30 winners in a thrilling semi-final, while in 2022 it was Newport who dominated 45–17. Different eras, same story – this fixture always delivers drama. Here’s everything you need to know about Newport’s weekend opportunity.

Last time out for Bridgend

Last weekend, the Ravens’ heart and fight were on full display in an electrifying clash. The sun was shining on the town as the Brewery Field was treated to some fantastic rugby.

A physical, tight encounter unfolded as the Drovers built a 14–3 lead, with Ben Burnell slotting Bridgend’s only points of the first half. It was in the second half that the game truly heated up. Llandovery ultimately secured a 26–18 victory thanks to tries from Harri Doel and Jamie Hughes, yet Bridgend fought until the very end. McCauley Rowley went over for a sensational score. A cross-kick from hooker Corey Lewis was struck with confidence as the ball travelled through the air and was finished by the winger. Tries from Edd Howley and Ryan Wilkins embodied the Ravens’ fighting spirit.

They should take a lot from that performance, as well as a sensational 50–27 win over Pontypool before that, setting up an exciting clash in Newport.

Bridgend Stats

From a statistical point of view, a few numbers stand out. Thomas Jevons has been ever-present, throwing himself into over 200 rucks and setting the tone with relentless effort. Alongside him, Rowley has lit up the league, slicing through defences with his line-breaking ability.

Bridgend currently sit eighth in the league with 25 points. They have three wins, 10 losses, and two draws. They have scored 348 points and conceded 521 throughout the campaign. However, they are a dangerous team and are more than capable of achieving big results.

Previous meetings

Back in November, these two sides met at the Brewery Field. The rain beat down on the pitch like a relentless drum as Newport came home with a 40–29 victory. Many sensational tries were scored on that day. With a burst of pace, Carwyn Penny broke through the defence, which had been opened up by Jonny Morris’ elusive footwork, and the move was finished in style by Che Hope, a move that perfectly captured the match’s attacking intent. Both teams know how to put points on the board and play with confidence. Expect fireworks tomorrow.

When these teams collide, there’s a different energy in the air. With much at stake, this match has all the makings of a battle that could linger long in the memory.
