James Alfred Bevan (back) was born in Caulfield, St Kilda, Victoria, Australia. He attended Hereford Cathedral School and played for Abergavenny. He was Wales’ first ever captain on 19th Feb 1881 while at Cambridge University. This was his only cap. He went to St Johns, Cambridge Oct 10th 1877 - Blues in 1877 & 1880. He joined Clifton RFC and lived in Bristol 1882-3. He played  just the 1 game for Newport  in 1880/1. He was awarded BA (1881) and MA (1891) and became an Anglican Clergyman and one of his sons became a bishop. Died 3 Feb 1938, Leytonstone.
