Ken Jones Passes Away


Former Newport wing Ken Jones passed away late Tuesday afternoon at the age of 84.

Ken won 44 caps for Wales and  scored 17 tries. He played for the Barbarians and  went on the British and Irish Lions tour to New Zealand in 1950 where he played in three test matches.

Ken represented GB at the 1948 Olympics at London and won a Silver Medal in 4 x 100 relay having originally been given the Gold before the USA were reinstated. He captained GB in European games at Berne in 1954 and represented Wales at Empire games in 1954 at Vancouver.

Ken captained Newport RFC in 1950/1 and 1953/4 and played 293 games scoring 145 tries and was awarded the OBE in 1960 for services to sport. He was a former President of Newport RFC.

There will be a minutes silence before The Dragons match against Cardiff Blues on Wednesday and also before Newport's Principality League match against Ebbw Vale on Saturday.
