Haydn Mainwaring

It was with great regret that Newport RFC received the news of the death of former player and committee man Haydn Mainwaring this week. Born in Swansea on the 10th of June 1933 (85) he attended Bishop Gore school from where he obtained Wales Under 15 and Secondary School caps.

Haydn joined Swansea RFC in 1952/53 and made 95 appearances until 1963 when he joined Newport RFC. He also appeared for Harlequins, London Welsh, The Royal Marines, The Royal Navy, Combined Services and The Barbarians. His one full cap for Wales came against France in 1961.

Haydn will always be remembered for his tackle/shoulder charge on Springbok captain Avril Malan whilst playing for the Barbarians (along with three future Newport RFC team mates Brian Price, WR Watkins and Brian 'BJ' Jones) at Cardiff Arms Park in January 1961 when they inflicted the only defeat of the tour against South Africa with a 6-0 win in the final match. He played other games for the Barbarians and also served them as a committee man until 1998.

Captain Mainwaring!! joined Newport RFC in 1963 on completion of his service career and after settling in the town. He captained Newport United in both 1963/64 and 66/67 as well as making 9 appearances for the 1st XV.

After his playing days he became a Newport RFC committee man and served for many years. A current Vice President of Crawshays RFC, who he also represented as a player. The sympathy of everyone at Rodney Parade is extended to Haydn's wife Eryl and his family at this very sad time.
