Following last Saturday’s trip to London to play Rosslyn Park we next make the short journey to the Welfare Ground to play our good friends Newbridge RFC. According to the records we last played each other in season 2004/5 in a league game where we managed a 41-12 victory. Our front row in that game was Ian Evans, Andrew Brown and Sven Cronk with Dan Griffiths playing outside half. Our strong bench contained Paul Young, Dai Pattison, Mathew Veater and Alex Walker.
But time has moved on and we no longer play Newbridge on a regular basis but we remain good friends and players have moved down the valley to continue successful rugby careers at Rodney Parade.
Once again the Newport coaching team will rotate the squad to give all our players a chance to show what they can do before the season starts.
The starting fifteen sees a very welcome return for our captain, Rhys Jenkins, who will intensify competition in the back row when fully fit. With Geraint O’Driscoll away on honeymoon, Elliot Frewen covers the fullback position
Newport: Lewis Smout, Will Evans, Tom Piper, Joe Bartlett, Rhys Cresswell, Morgan Burgess, Rhys Jenkins (Capt.), Chris Williams, Tom Lucas, Haydn Simons, Andy Evans, Matt McGovern, Haydn Palmer, Harri Lang, Elliot Frewen.
Replacements: Liam Bodman, Evan Whitson, Jack Williams, Connor Shefford, Josh Skinner, Kyle Tayler, Mathew Reed, Henry Palmer, Garin Harris, Ryan Bates, Geraint Watkins, Matt O’Brien, Jon Morris, Chay Smith.
Kick off: 2:30 PM
Newbridge Youth will play Bargoed at 12:30 PM before the main game. There will be a Family Day with BBQ if the weather is fine. Everyone welcome.
