Newport travel to St. Helens in good spirit after a convincing win against Cardiff last Saturday. Although it was a very good victory the coaching team will be looking for that consistency of performance that just seems to evade us.
Our opponents were very disappointed to lose their last game away to Carmarthen by a last minute penalty try. They seem to have got stronger as the season progressed and are now a tough team to beat.
Our Cup games against Swansea are always exciting. In 2013, after putting 95 points on Bonymaen in the first round, we played them at RP a fortnight later and they surprised us by getting a 17 – 14 victory. Last season they were again unfancied when they returned to RP but put in a great performance before going down 21 – 18 thanks to a couple of late penalties kicked by Matt O’Brien.
Older supporters will remember some other classic encounters over the years, several of which involved Newport legend, Glenn George. In 1993 Glenn played his last and 294th game for Newport against Swansea at St. Helens. On Saturday Glen’s son, Max, plays his first game for Newport against Swansea at St. Helens
