It’s hard to believe that we’ve only played Merthyr once in league games – and that was a 26 – 50 loss at Rodney Parade last season.  They were worthy winners that day with strong players throughout their team although Newport did get a four-try losing bonus point.  So far this season things haven’t gone well for Merthyr with losses against Cardiff, Bedwas and Pontypridd although they have scored plenty of points.  The will be desperate to get a win on Saturday and the Black & Ambers are going to face a huge back-lash.

On the other hand the Rodney Parade outfit will have a spring in their step after a pair of nail-biting wins against Pontypridd and Ebbw Vale.  Two victories against two good sides and the games were enjoyable to watch.  The coaching team made several unforced changes and they must be very pleased that those changes worked, although they now have some tough selection decisions.  There were lots of bumps and bruises after Saturday’s game and the team will be selected after Thursday’s training session and some last minute fitness checks.

Newport: Matt Prosser, Evan Whitson, Tom Piper, Gavin Bilton, Rhys Cresswell, Morgan Burgess, Joe Cullimore, Alex Everett, Ryan James, Matt O'Brien, Jon Morris, Tom Pascoe, Chay Smith, Harri Lang, Geraint O'Driscoll.

Replacements: John Lavender, Will Evans, Garin Harris, Henry Palmer, Kyle Tayler, Owen Davies, Adam Sabri, Curtis Ayling.

It was good to see a supporters’ bus at Ebbw Vale and the players really appreciated the vocal support.  There will be a bus to Merthyr and I’m told there are still some seats left.  Book now and don’t be disappointed!
