Garfield, your friends and former playing colleagues at Newport Rugby Football club were delighted to hear that you are to be inducted into the Keighley RLFC Hall of Fame. This is a truly deserved honour.
We at Newport RFC are delighted to have played a part in your illustrious career. Those who saw you make your Newport debut, playing at fullback, on Easter Tuesday 1954 against the famous Barbarians – who incidentally fielded no fewer than 13 internationals that day - knew that you were destined to become one of the great players.
The Newport team that day also had it stars including Welsh internationals Ken Jones, Brian Jones, Malcolm Thomas, Onllwyn Brace, Bryn Meredith, Ian Ford and Leighton Jenkins. But you were not overawed and came through with flying colours as you helped the Black & Ambers to a fine victory. The rest as they say is history as you went on to play for Wales before turning professional and going north to achieve further fame.
Have a great evening Garfield. We will be thinking of you back here in Wales.
