Newport RFC has announced the signing of six more players for the new season, three with experience at a professional level. Joining from the Newport Gwent Dragons are prop Gethin Robinson, flanker Rhys Jenkins and scrum half James Leadbeater – all three have played for Newport before having been Newport’s contracted regional players last season.
“The signing of Gethin, Rhys and James will boost our squad as they bring with them professional experience which will stand us in good stead for the season ahead. The knowledge and experience that they will have picked up while with the regional side will prove vital as we mount our league campaign,” commented Newport’s head coach Sven Cronk.
29-year-old Gethin has played for Newport on more than 200 occasions, has scored 13 tries and is a crowd favourite with the Black and Ambers. James has played for Newport on 50 occasions and scored 10 tries while 21-year-old Rhys has played for Newport 29 times scoring three tries.
Also signing contracts with the Black and Ambers are hooker Ryan Prosser, outside half Tom Hancock and centre Adam Davies. Fly half Tom possesses good vision with the ability to effectively organise the three-quarter line. 24-year-old Ryan has lots of experience, he is an age-grade Wales international who has also played for the Cornish Pirates and will challenge for the number two jersey. Adam Davies is a strong tackling centre who carries the ball well.
“These are exciting young players who are eager to make an impact in a Black and Amber shirt. They are three quality signings who bolster our squad for the season ahead and I am looking forward to seeing how they develop in pre season training,” concluded Sven Cronk.
