A brace of tries by Tom Williams helped Cardiff beat oldest rivals Newport in the first Principality Premiership game played on the new Arms Park pitch. The game was virtually out of reach of the Black and Ambers within the first 15 mins as 3 tries gave the home side the perfect start. The first was down to the pace of the back three. Joe Griffin collected a loose clearance kick after the pack had put pressure on the visitors pack. Griffin found Dan Fish who linked with Tom Williams. He in turn found support in Rory Watts-Jones who crossed for the first try. Fish himself was to score the second. A speculative chip and chase saw him use his pace and get to ball over the line just in front of the Newport cover. The third went to Williams again Fish starting the move this time though all the backs were involved and a few of the forwards, Ryan Harford showing his skills with a deft flick around his back in mid-field before Williams was put over in the corner. The Blue & Blacks then seemed to take their foot off the pedal allowing Newport back into the game. Tyler Morgan grabbed their first points after a bouncing ball wasn’t dealt with. Some slack tackling and pace from the young Newport centre put him in under the posts. Geraint O’Driscoll added the extras for a half time score 15-7 in favour of the home side.
The second half was more of the same from Newport as they came more into the game, but Cardiff secured the bonus point from a mistake by the visitors. An overthrown lineout steal allowed Fish to give the Blue & Blacks great field position and when the ball was secured several pairs of hands were used before captain Johnathon Edwards went over in the corner. The fifth try was all about the back three again. Griffin broke the line to create havoc in the Newport defence. He was tackled just short but when the ball was moved away from the ruck Fish ran across field before picking the perfect pass to Williams who ran the perfect line. Griffin added the extras. Newport then woke up. Two tries in the space of five minutes gave them hope. Elliot Frewen showed his pace to set up fellow wing Ashton Hewitt to score, and it was Frewen who scored their third, neither of which were converted. But Cardiff had the last word. A series of penalties gave a foothold in the visitors 22 and following a series of drives at the line Nick White ended up at the bottom of a pile over the line to take Cardiff third in the Premiership table.
