Match Report

Newport 24 Pontypridd 15 (HT: 17-3)

This was almost a re-run of Newport's magnificent win against leaders Neath on last Sunday. Once again the B&A's had stop-gap No10 Ryan James, stop gap place kicker Jamie Leadbeater and stop gap tight-head Dai Pattison and once again they did not disappoint. They throroughly deserved their 17-3 lead at HT playing with a strong wind and then turned around to defend magnificently with some players almost tackling themselves to a stand still. Wing Alan Awcock - just back from injury - interceped and ran three quarters of the field to touch down under the posts for a crucial score just 4 mins after the turn around. The win came at a cost with Rhys Jenkins, Craig Hill and Sam Waldron all picking up injuries.

Chris Kirwan, SWA writes :

Newport’s mini-revival continued at Rodney Parade with a terrific 24-15 win against title-chasing Pontypridd. The Black and Ambers repeated the magnificent defensive display that had earned victory against Neath five days earlier. Newport were good value for their 17-3 lead at the break. Penalties were traded before No 8 Hywel Stoddart scored a well-crafted try after a great turnover by lock Adam Frampton, a lovely run by centre Scott Williams and a nice offload by scrum-half James Leadbeater.

And Newport were in command thanks to a pair of interception tries either side of the break – lock Adam Frampton from 25 metres and wing Alan Awcock from 90. With flanker Carl Townsend and Leadbeater in inspired form the Black and Ambers held on for their fifth win in six league games despite late scores by Ryan Harford and Chris Clayton and 11 minutes of injury time.
