SWA report : The Newport backs looked sharper early on but faded away in the final quarter, so much so that hooker and captain Andrew Brown looked one of their best runners. Newport held a 10-3 lead and stayed in front for 29 mins even regaining it at 20-19 just after the hour mark. But, Bedwas were then playing ‘down the slope’ to their favourite end, strangely as Newport had won the toss.
Centre Darren Ryan not only scored his first league try for Bedwas, but typified the effort his teammates made and the try was the best move of the game. Evergreen Deri Mattravers and skipper Phil Sargent were splendid in their efforts, hard though Brown and Dafydd Rosser tried for Newport. Penalties by Gareth Bowen and Richard Powell started the scoring and then Craig Hill sent Brown diving over from a lineout with a fine Bowen conversion. Powell pulled two penalties back by the break and then good rucking and passing saw left wing Kristian Owen cross, though Bowen’s penalty pegged it at 14-13. Ian Smerdon almost scored and then he took Ryan’s switch pass before finding his partner tearing up for the return and a classy try. Yet, Newport were quickly back in front as James Leadbeater tore a huge hole and Brown stormed over for Bowen to convert at 20-19. Bedwas then came on strong and after a storming Mattravers run, Sargent blasted over with Powell converting. The last score was a clincher as the golden boot of Powell, the top Premiership scorer, kicked a penalty.
