Having got themselves into a winning position of 25-21 and leading after 62 mins, Newport let in 2 tries and fail to add to their total and come away from Talbot Athletic Ground with nothing. Starting with a squad of only 21 due to a phenomenal injury list, they lost lock Dafydd Rosser after 36 mins with a nasty looking knee injury.
Following a missed penalty by Aberavon No 10 Matthew Jarvis, full-back Ricky Thomas ran in a try on 8 mins but the conversion was missed. Newport No 10 Lewis Robling missed two penalties but made amends when he raced over on 15 mins after a charge down and he duly converted for a 7-5 lead but then missed another penalty on 19 mins. Busy scrum-half James Leadbeater increased Newport's lead to 12-5 only for Robling to miss the conversion. Ospreys centre Ashley Beck reduced the lead to 10-12 with a try only for Robling to add a penalty. Then Aberavon wing Richard Thomas scored on 40+2 mins for a HT score of 15-15.
Jarvis kicked a penalty 1 min after the restart and Newport's Pat Leach shook off tackles to get over just 1 min later and Robling neatly converted. Once again Newport conceded a penalty to make the score 21-22 in favour of the visitors. Then came possibly the turning point of the match. Wizards' lock James King was yellow-carded on 49 mins but instaed of pushing home their numerical superiority Newport only managed to kick a penalty to increase their lead to 21-25. Newport's hooker Andrew Brown was yellow-carded on 57 mins and Newport were not to score again in the match and conceded 2 soft tries by Morris and Beck. Jarvis kicked 2 penalties and 2 conversions for a flattering score of 41-25.
