Match Report

Newport 19 Pontypool 3 (HT:9-0)

Mike Poole scores his 7th try in 9 outings so far this season.

Under-strength Newport with 5 of their squad on injury on list, 3 on Wales 7’s duty in Dubai and prop Gethin Robinson on Dragons duty made heavy work of beating a limited Pontypool side who also had their injury problems. Newport finally won as they made fewer mistakes than Pontypool and dominated the line-outs throughout an error strewn match. Thick fog helped neither side as both sides used the up and under in an attempt to induce handling errors. In the end Newport deserved their win against their old rivals scoring the only 2 tries of the match and in general having far more territory and possession.

In the 1st half Newport had a fair share of penalties awarded by referee Matthew Aplin and Daniel Griffiths kicked three  from  five on 5, 24 and 36 mins for a HT lead of 9-0. On the 3rd min of the resumption Newport leading try scorer  Mike Poole added to his total when he went over in the corner after a rare good three-quarter move by the home side to make the score 14-0.  Pontypool wing Dan Gravell also had a good run and evaded many tacklers before finally being brought down in the Newport 22. It was now Pontypool’s turn for a share of the penalties and No 10 Tom Hancock obliged on 47 mins. The ever hard working Cae Trayhern showed up at times but it was not enough and No 6 Dan McShane went over after a drive from a lineout for a final score of 19-3 with Pontypool hoping that Newport do the same in their next two matches against Bedwas and Cross Keys to help ease their relegation worries.
