This was another game that Newport should have won and once again they failed to capitalise on the good work done by the pack in which Andrew Coombes and Craig Hill stood out. In the end Cardiff beat Newport for the first time in nine attempts in the Welsh Premiership at the Arms Park. The Blue-and-Blacks battled back from 13-0 down and 13-3 down at HT.
Newport outside-half James Dixon had helped the visitors to their 13pt lead with two penalties and by converting a try by hooker Andrew Brown with Cardiff fly-half Craig Evans scoring Cardiff ‘s only points with a penalty just before half-time.
Cardiff took the lead after the interval with two quick tries from full-back Roger Davies and replacement Damian Welch with Evans converting one. Newport restored their lead with a long-range penalty from replacement fly-half Daniel Griffiths before the inconsistent Evans then ensured Cardiff celebrated their fifth win in eight games this season with two late penalties.
